Requiem

Requiem is a work of imaginative realism that draws upon the tonal sensitivity and compositional restraint associated with 19th-century painting, particularly the influence of James McNeill Whistler. While grounded in classical technique, the composition moves beyond direct observation into a more symbolic and interpretive space.

The painting presents a contemplative dialogue between life and mortality, where carefully arranged elements and the presence of the figure create a quiet, introspective atmosphere. Emphasis is placed on harmony, subdued color relationships, and the controlled use of light, allowing mood and meaning to emerge gradually.

Echoing Whistler’s tradition of titling works after musical forms, Requiem is conceived as a visual composition guided by rhythm and tone rather than narrative clarity. The result is a balanced fusion of academic training and imaginative interpretation.

Developed from an earlier red chalk study, the work reflects a deliberate progression from drawing to painting, maintaining consistency in structure, tone, and emotional restraint throughout.
